Naked Skydiving Now Available @ Mira Mesa Barnes and Noble

After talking to Cameron, the head cashier at Barnes & Noble, he agreed to carry a few copies of my autobiographical novel, “Naked Skydiving,” the story of a dream interpreter, traveling throughout west coast before 9-11.

There might also be an open reading at this Barnes & Noble near the 15 freeway on Mira Mesa Blvd this Wednesday night and I’ll read a little from the book and maybe some new work. You can read your own work too! Check back to this blog for details, all thanks to Cameron and the new management at Barnes & Noble. “Naked Skydiving” is available in the fiction section under the S’s for Schaffner, my last name. If I see you in the store, I’ll autograph your copy! Next, I’ll be working to get the book in every Barnes & Noble

Chassidic Pop Art

A few months ago,I went to an art exhibit at Chabad of University City and saw these magnificent artworks , some like this picture of hamantashens, which are Jewish cookies, resembling a Warhol painting.

Most of his work is brightly colored like this, giving his religious subjects an ecstatic feeling.

Here is dreidel, a Jewish top from a Hannukah game.

This is the Etz Chaim, The Tree of Life.

Day Of The Dead In a Real Cemetery!

Today November 1st, is the Mexican Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos. It’s a holiday  with a Halloweenish  flavor. Last week, I was invited by a friend who eats fire and walk on stilts for a living named J7 to go to a Day of the Dead ceremony in a real San Diego cemetery, La Vista Memorial Park in National City on her Facebook page.  It was amazing!

Here I am below with face paint on for the event as the clown of death. The face painter liked my autobiographical novel, “Naked Skydiving” so much, she traded me her work for a signed copy of my book. The face painting cost less than my books so she gave me $5 on top of that!

The event had a carnival like atmosphere in the cemetery. There was a main stage

where many people were in costumes wearing day of the Dead skeleton face paintings.

and personal items. Here are some altars that are homages to dead relatives:

Volcanic Terrarium Dream

Print

I dreamed that my old Adobe Premiere Pro video editing teacher created a terrarium with plants, and water and perhaps a lizard in it. But it was different than other terrarium with glass domes over them, because it had volcanic flames shooting up from craters inside it. Then they threw this guy who was accused of terrorism in there too. It was weird, and that was the end of the dream.

Since the unconscious likes to play with words, I thought about this and made a parallel between terrarium and terrorism. The words are spelled very similar, but it felt like a frightening dream at the time I experienced it, because of the terrorist being burned up and tortured in the volcanic terrarium.

A SURREAL FANTASY ABOUT THE ISLAND OF BIKINI ATOLL

Dreamed a few nights ago that I was telemarketing again like I used to for the Welk Resort, and then they needed somebody to write articles.  I thought they picked me to do it but I was in a school like UCLA that had rabbis studying and I had my friend’s phone.  It rang so I tried to call her but she of course couldn’t answer cause I had her phone. I wanted her and her friends to know that I had gone and seen the beautiful blue waters of Bikini Atoll, with smoke coming out of its crater.  I called again and finally got ahold of them and asked them to meet me there. They agreed

This dream mirrors the phases in my life from telemarketer to reporter to student to relationships to explorer of a beautiful but deadly paradise, Bikini Atoll, where the first atomic bomb was tested, which made the whole island so radioactive, that all the natives had to be relocated. Yet, it is still reported to be a beautiful place for scuba diving and finding hidden sunken treasures.  It also reminds me of the cover of my book,” Naked Skydiving,” with its blue and green island on the front of the book. Maybe this dream explains the explosive improvement in sales of my “Naked Skydiving novel that I’m experiencing lately. Creating and living just from your writing or art can be dangerous but beautiful, and with God’s help and my friends, that’s what I’m experiencing now. The book’s price has also gone up, on Amazon. It originally sells for $18.95, yet I saw one Amazon retailer reselling an autograph copy I signed, for $50.00!  Pretty cool and exciting!  You can still order your copy for $18.95 on www.iuniverse.com or if you meet me somewhere in San Diego, I’ll be happy to autograph it for you in person and it’ll still be only $18.95.

Dreamed I Got Invited To Jon Stewart’s Daily Show

Last night, I dreamed I got invited to Jon Stewart’s Daily Show!  I didn’t know exactly why I was invited, whether it was to be in the audience or be a guest, or because I won a contest.  I got on a plane, walked through, and for some reason, I was told the show was being taped in Colorado.  So that’s where I flew.  I got off the plane, went through a tin can like cavern and didn’t know where to find the show.  Then I figured since it was in Colorado, maybe it was in a mountain.  I started to feel lost, and then there was some writing scrawled on the rocks with an arrow pointing to the Daily Show.  I followed it a short way and entered the mountain studio.  It was the usual familiar set, and I felt like I knew some of the stars and other people were there from San Diego, including a local actor I know on Facebook, named Butch Dye or was it that famous guy he reminds me of ?  Anyway,  I woke up after this dream feeling victorious and excited.  Maybe Stewart read one of my articles in eastcountymagazine.org about abused kids or other news or my novel, “Naked Skydiving,” and this was finally  my chance to be famous or recognized for my work as a writer.  It felt great!

Movie Star Dream

I dreamed that I was volunteering for this movie production company and I didn’t feel it was worth it, until this famous female star starts talking to me.  Not sure if it was Karen Black,

or Meg Ryan or one of the other screen icons I grew up with.  She was very nice and made conversation with me.  She told me to give her my contact information and she would call me about a project.  I felt pretty excited that it could happen.  It felt really cool.  I remember meeting Karen Black at a little theater performance in Carmel, CA for a moment backstage but we never really spoke.  This dream is like an extension of my thoughts of what I would have said if I wasn’t so shy and she had reached out to me as she did in this dream.

3D Sculpting With Sculptris Software

Starfish Sculptris                                                                                                  3D Sculpting With Sculptis Software

Recently I attended Adobe evangelist, Stephen Burns’ free Photoshop users group last Saturday at the San Diego Art Institute.  Stephen is a friend of mine who I volunteered to help during the March 2013 Adobe Create Now Conference, and an award winning graphic artist.  Sometimes, he has other guests  that make presentations as part of his lecture.

One of his guests, from the company, thebestSD.com,specializes in the best 3D graphics and told the group about a fascinating program for creating 3D sculptures online called Sculptris.  Just Google Sculptris, and go to the website for a free download.  Then, start playing with the shapes and colors.  You can get some pretty wild designs and it’s really a lot of fun! Sculptris invites you to have fun and experiment. Being a writer before a designer, I even had fun naming my 3D sculptures intriguing names such as Green Goblin, Opal Essence, Starfish Sculpris as seen above and others.  The program starts you off with a 3D sphere which you can color and stretch any way that you like.  For some reason, when you stretch out the sphere, the shapes sometimes end up with demonic horns. I suppose you could make angelic halos and wings too if you’re skillful and the spirit moves you. In order to save your work though, you must use Photoshop so you can turn the images into a jpeg which is not so user friendly but still a lot of fun.
